Alloa soldier welcomes Becks to Afghanistan
Lance corporal John McClelland met David Beckham during his visit to Afghanistan.
AN ALLOA soldier met football star David Beckham during the England player's morale-boosting visit to troops in Afghanistan at the weekend.
Lance Corporal John McClelland (23), of the Royal Engineers, got the chance to have his photograph taken and to chat to the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan midfielder.
Beckham - who missed out on the chance to play in the World Cup in South Africa due to an injury - paid tribute to the men and women he met at Camp Bastion in Helmand, describing them as the bravest people he had ever met.
John has been out in Afghanistan for four months, but is due to return home to the Wee County this week for a short break before heading back out again.
It will be a chance to catch up with his proud parents, Jimmy and Jackie, and his grandad, Henry, himself a former member of the armed forces, having seen active service in Cyprus in 1958 and 1959.
This is John's first tour of Afghanistan, having previously served in Iraq.
